For AIMA to accept your policy, select hospitalization and outpatient.
When you get a quote online, you choose which coverages to include.
A policy without both of these is refused at the residency interview. Everything else is optional.
Hospitalization
Portuguese: Hospitalização
Inpatient stays, surgery and emergency admissions in Portuguese private hospitals.
Outpatient care
Portuguese: Ambulatório
Family doctor (GP) and specialist consultations, exams and diagnostics in private clinics.
A guided process, from quote to AIMA-ready policy.
Heads up: Portuguese health insurance policies are usually subject to a clinical questionnaire, so the certificate is not issued instantly and the contract paperwork is provided in Portuguese.

Subscribe & complete the medical questionnaire
You subscribe online directly with us, you then receive an email to complete a clinical questionnaire online.
Approval, payment & policy
Once the medical questionnaire is reviewed and approved, you make the first payment and the official documentation is issued for your AIMA file.
Need it faster? Choose MGEN.
MGEN is the exception: no clinical questionnaire, so the policy is issued much faster — ideal if your AIMA appointment is close. The trade-off: MGEN requires you to insure your entire household (spouse and dependent children) on the same contract.
Faster issuance
No medical questionnaire — documentation is issued quickly after subscription.
Whole household
You must insure your full family unit — spouse and dependent children — on the same policy.
A private Portuguese health insurance policy — not travel insurance.
AIMA distinguishes between short-stay Schengen travel insurance and a resident health policy. Only the latter is accepted.
Note that Portuguese private health insurance covers care in private hospitals and clinics — not public SNS hospitals, which follow a separate system.

Is this the same as Schengen travel insurance?
No. Schengen travel insurance covers short stays and is not accepted for residency. AIMA requires a resident private health policy issued in Portugal.
Does the policy cover public (SNS) hospitals?
No. Portuguese private health insurance gives you access to private hospitals and clinics. The public SNS follows a separate system.
Is the simulator in English?
The simulator is in Portuguese. Your browser's translator (right-click → Translate to English) converts the whole flow in one click.
Why isn't the policy issued immediately?
Most Portuguese health insurers underwrite each applicant through a clinical questionnaire. The policy is issued after it is reviewed and approved.
What's special about MGEN?
MGEN does not require a clinical questionnaire, so documentation is issued much faster. In exchange, you must insure your entire household on the same contract.
Which coverages must I select?
Hospitalization (Hospitalização) and outpatient care (Ambulatório). Without both, the policy is refused at the residency interview.
